MeJUgencer has the following:Mr. Smith Trent, Sheriff of McDowell County, was in the city yesterday, engaged in the payment of taxes into the Auditor’s office. In a conversation'with him touching matters and things in that region, wo learned some curious facts concerning the remote country from which he comes* Of all the counties in the State, McDowell, one of the largest in territory, is the least in ’ 'r - 1 --..............***.....but spars**; but duringtlic rebellion the Union men were driven away, and when they were able to return, the rebel* had been behaving .so hadly that they in their turn were afraid to stay, so that small as the population was toforc, it is still h now. There is no* a po* toffee in the county, nor a town, or a village even of tho most diminutive proportions; there are but few roads, and they are indifferent. Thecourt house is a log cabin ; there is not a lawyer or doctor in the county, and, ns a cons quence, the people are healthy and free fmm litigation. It is diffcult to find men in the county who have sufficient acquaintance with the arts of modem times to fill the various County offices.
