The Hospital Echo, in its last issue, gives a description of an industry at the State hospital, which we reproduce: “Mr. Dennis Byrnes, the long-time faithful attendant on the east side sick , ward, is quite a bird fancier.. He has one section of an alcove partitioned'off with .wire netting, forming a good-sized apartment for his many plumedwarblers. Within are smaller eages fpr use daring the brooding seasons, and small trees or shrubs from whose swaying branches the swest-voioed songsters pour /orth their liquid notes. The birds beoome so tame as to. fly about the ward, returning of their own accord to their quarters. Indeed; once last Bummer, seven of them, unbidden, tooka merry flight through a chance-opened window, but returned again as the setting sun warned them of approaching eve. Sixty-three little feathered bequties were raised, during the Summer, most of which havei gone to give music and cheer toother wards. I Several verities have been gathered from far and near. ‘Among them ate German canaries, wild canaries, mourning doves, goldfinches,Java sparrows, arnsqfceake, cockatoos and i paroquets—about fllty in all, A.new lot of young ones will be raised next month.”
