artistChanute“Seeing Is More than Looking” is the title of the new show at the Chanute Art Gallery for February.Featured will be the work of Robert Ixifgren, Chicago, who was born and reared in Chanute. He received his art instruction at the Art Institute, Kansas City; the American Academy of Art, Chicago; Cranbrook Academy of Art, Bloomfield Hills, Mich.Lofgren is associated with Krantzen Studio, Chicago, as art coordinator. He was photography editor at large for thertCurtis Publishing Company, a consulting art director for Popular Mechanics, photography editor for American magazine and art editor for Household magazine, Topeka.His versatility will be exhibited in 45wworks executed in seven media. Although his paintings show the influence of modern art styles, Lofgren has altered them to express his own awareness of the world.“Seeing is more than looking.” he has said, and he has observant empathy for the activities of people and the nuances of earth and sky.Of special interest in the Lofgren show will be a painting “The Dream Is Empty,” which inspired Nora B. Cunningham. 503 N. Western, to write a poem which was published in the Kansas City Star. The autographed copy of the poem will be exhibited with the painting.His colors range from the somber tones of “The Ancient Mariner” through the“shifting moods of mountains” and the bright shades of “Sunflowers.” His people are real people and his places are authentic.Lofgren’s paintings have been exhibited in 25 cities, including Wichita, Hutchinson, Kansas City, Chicago and DetroitFeb. 15 will be Robert Lofgren Day at the art gallery when the board of directors will host an open house in his honor.The art gallery in the Tioga Hotel is open from noon to 4 p.m. daily at no charge to visitors.Robert Lofgren
