Poetry-in-Motion rehearsingBy JANICE CHAVERS Bulletin Staff WriterPoetry-in-Motion is back in tion again, rehearsing a play next month.ac-forThe group, which aims to bring black theatrical productions to the community, will present Samm-Art Williams’ “Home” Feb. 25 to 27 as part of Black History Month.The folk comedy is quite different from the group’s premiere production “For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide/ When the Rainbow is Enuf,” Shirley Weatherly, president of the group, said.“We tried to get a play with a story to tell. ‘For Colored Girls’ was abstract, heavy. This play is fun, but it does have some serious overtones. Everyone can relate toit,” Weatherly said.“Home,” which received a Tony nomination, covers a time in the life of a southern farmer fromA F oik Comedy bySAMM ART WILLIAMSCross Roads, N.C., in the late 1950’s to the present, who is forced to seek his fortune “up north,” but finds “the good life” back home at last.The group has been in rehearsal for the play since the end of November.The three person cast includes Vem Smith as Woman #■ 1, Celena Bostic Perry as Woman #■ 2 and Robert Davis as Cephus Miles.Weatherly is the producer of the play, Irma Hampton Nave is director and Rhonda Lynn is consultant.Others working on the play include Lyn, production stage manager; Debbie Godfrey, set design;Firdausah Jami, costume; Marilyn Collier, musical director; Virginia Streaty, understudy; and Lona Stewart-Smith, prompter.Performances will be at 7:30 p.m. Feb. ‘25 and 26 and at 4 p.m. Feb. 27.Tickets are $5 and may be purchased in advance by calling Mrs. Isaac Weatherly.After this production, the group definitely will do more. “Maybe next time we’ll do a production with roles for children — or one for a children’s audience,” Weatherly said.Weatherly added the group doesn’t do several plays, because all the members have jobs and are involved in a number of community-minded organizations.
