Bruce Hopkins.)Poneys Rolled AlieadBy CAROL CONTES Catalina Reporter•In the winner’s'circle in the pop music field, the Stone Po-;neys are racing to.success.Including two former Catalina students, the Stone Poneys have won the race with their single, “Different Drums,” which has been on record charts across the nation for over a month.They also have been featured recently on the Joey Bishop show.Linda Ronstadt and Shep Cooke, both ’64 graduates, grew up together musically,” Linda stated in an interview while relaxing at her Tucson home.Cooke replaced Kenneth Edwards before the group began the recording of its third album on Capitol.The Stone Poneys also includes Bob Kimmel, another Tucsonian who composes and arranges most of their songs.Linda began her singing career at fee now non-existent coffee shops of Tucson’s old “folk” center, Ash Alley.She sang folk music in a trio which also included her brother •and sister until three years ago. Then fee Stone Poneys were formed.The Poneys want to make better music according to Linda. She feels they have a very good chance of doing this since theyare signed to Capitol — fee same company which record the Beatles.“1 dig performing,” says the lead singer. Have you ever been in one?” Linda asked, adding that she misses the city.The Stone Poneys have been doing concerts in the Los Angeles area, mostly at colleges. She predicts that they soon will perform at the University of Arizona.“I’d love to play in Tucson,” she comments.She described hearing herself on the radio as “groovy. Right now, I wouldn’t want to be doing anything else.”“Some day wd’ll be tired of the music business.
