Introducin’ on your right, the one and only BILL BENDER, trick and fancy roper and rider who will display his skill foryour entertainment This may not be the introduction given by themaster of ceremonies forWeideman Wild West Show,but he was referring to Bemidji’s Bill Bender at the time, around 1910, when Bill, fresh from high school, (or nearly so) was breaking into Show Biz. In addition to his stint with hoss and lariet,Bill, about 19, earned his pay by doubling as band leader for the Weideman tent show.Bill’s career in the entertainment field, whichincluded some traveling with a “Tom Show,’’ was interspersed with World War I soldiering, some farming and storekeeping, the latter at New York Mills,Minn., from whence he came to Bemidji inNovember of 1930.This is not being written to call your attention to the many contributions Bill has made to Bemidji and neighboring communities in the areas of civic services, business and entertainment. But it is an invitation for all of his friends, and they are legion, to drop in at the Sveden House, Markham Hotel building, Sunday, Jan. 24, and wish him a happy birthday.
