Afrer a desperate warfare, extending over the last week, Peter Rudolf, styled “King of the Poachers,” has been captured in a long boat chase Ijake Mercer, which is partly In Auglaize and partly in Mercer county.The capture of Rudolf by armed deputies of General John 0. Speaks, state game warden, and the pursuit of others of the poachers who are accused of carrying on gigantic poaching operations on Lake Mercer and Lewfstown reservoir, have been followed by the breathing of threats of vengeance, carried into the towns form the fastnesses about the state reservoirs, where the poachers conceal themselves.The capture of Rudolf was accomplished only after a long siege of the lake. Armed deputies have patrolled the banks for a week, at timesstealing up in boats on parties ofpoachers operating in the dead of night. Frequent exchanges of bullets have occurred, with no knowncasualties, though deputies say a cry as of a wounded man was heard inone of the battles a few nights ago.Rudolf was found in a boat, alone, and led the deputies a long chase before he finally was captured.Rudolf was brought to St. Mary’sand in the trial which followed asserted his innocence of violation of the game laws. The state called witnesses to show that Rudolf was tending a net when the deputiescame on him on the reservoir andthat he tried to evade capture. Thecourt’s decision is withheld till next
