Girl Scouts begin cookie drive todayLocal Girl Scouts in the Fort Madison area will begin taking orders today through Feb. 2 for Girl Scout cookies.Girl Scouts in Shining Trail Council, which provides a Girl Scout program for girls in Louisa, Henry, Jefferson, Lee and Des Moines counties and Henderson County in Illinois, are selling seven varieties of cookies this year.The new cookie this year is Golden Nut Clusters,” a chewy caramel and pecan mixture on a tender cookie covered with a light maple-flavored coating.Also available are Thin Mints, Trefoils, Samoas, ChaletGIRL SCOUTS,Cremes, Do-si-Dos and TagAlongs.The cookies sell for $2.50 a box, with 25 cents a box going directly to Camp L-Kee-Ta for the new Troop House and log cabins.Camp L-Kee-Ta, south of Danville, is a 150-acre camp ownedby the council The camp has a lodge, unit shelters, wash houses, hiking and horseback riding trails, swimming pool and a shower house.Proceeds from the cookie sale also support both local troops and the area council The council served 2,914 girls during 1991, according to statistics from Shining Trail.Cookies can be ordered from neighborhood Girl Scouts and at Girl Scout cookie booth displays around the area.
