The new firm will be known a* the Miller-Meade Mill and Elevator.(Republic fhoto by Helgebnd)By LES HELGELAND Republic News Servke Director PLANKINTON — A veteranPlankinton grain dealer and legislator completed a deal here last week tn which he disposed of his partnership in the mill and elevator business here.Carl Furchner, who says he was •'brought up in the milling and grain business/* announced that he had sold his interest in the Furchner - Miller Mill and Elevator here to Howard Meade, a lifelong resident of Plankinton and a20 • year employe of the firm, i ,The new business will be I known as the Miller - Meade Mill and Elevator, according to Otto Miller, who has been in partnership with Furchner here . since 1946.Furchners father, the late Carl) land went to work in an elevator; Plankinton Mill before the turn of I 1 the century. He went into the grain1 business in 1923 and his son. Carl, joined him. After the senior Furch-ner's death In 1931, his son took over the operation of two elevators in Plankinton.Because of poor health in the 40's, Carl Furchner sold out to Lloyd Thomas. After a stay in the hospital, he returned to Plankinton and went to work in an elevator which Otto Millar had purchased. Miller continued to live on the farm.In 1946, they purchased the elevator back from Thomas and the partnership was formed tn 1957, they increased the capacity of their elevator with a 52.006 bushel capacity, later they added additional bin space of* 120,000 bushels for an overall capacity of nearly 200,000bushels,Meade joined the firm as an employe In 1940. He worked for several months before going into the army and then came back to his old job in 1941,Furchner did not announce future plans. Miller and Meade announced that the business woud continue as it has. handting feed and grain needs of the area. The firm also hai a custom grinding operation.
