Throughout the day he wa* In a very reminiscent mood, which was a frequent occurrence, and intalking with George Duff jrd, a mem* her of the hcusefiold, he related many things that happened fifty and sixty years ago.I $After dinner he sat up for a while,and then retired at hla usual time. H| felt as good as usual, save for a slight affection of the stomach, which caused him to rise onoe or twice during th* night. He awoke very early, as ' waS his custom, and after dreeeing went tp the sitting room, adjoining his bedj-room. While there he attended tbi fire in the stove, and after shaking ft remarked that he had a little dlstreak In hia chest, and ha thought he wouldlie down on his bed a tew minutes. It was scarcely two minutes after hi laid down before: he passed awa]He died very quietly and easy, wife was with him when he died, physician was called, but nothicould be done. \ I kWilliam O. Ayers was born Febni-ary 11th, 1809, just back of North Plainfield, at a i place near Union Tillage. He waa dftsUnguised for thefact that he was born the same daythat Abraham Lincoln was, and b^d he Uved till February 11th next ha would have been 91 years of agl. Early to life he became an apprentice to the carpenter trade, which business he followed through life. When comparatively a young he moved his city, and for sixty-four years lie lived In the house where be died, except for one year spent in Trenton. During the early days he was the carpenter and contractor of the city, and among the buildings that now sudd to his credit are the First Baptist church, Trinity Reformed church. First M. E. and Holy Gross churches, North Avecue Button, and the building owned by Dr. Taylor which sunda at the corner of North and Park av*-nntSL This latter building was the first three-story one erected in this city. There are many other buildings he erected of smaller size. He wie considered a master of his trade. * Iv i*f' ' */ bt1 it _ * NrFar many years and up to five years ago he was the agent in this vicinity for the Central New Jersey Land Improvement Company, and looked afttrthe company’s property between Jersey City and PhUllpeburg. For fourteen years be was an active member of the Union County Board of Freeholders. and for many years he was a member of the Asbestos Club. He wife faithful, earnest Christian and wag a member of the First Baptist church, where be attended regularly the services. Up tOjbls death he was the only member left of the original Harmony Fire Company, and was the oldest member of the Exempt Fire man. Later on he, together with the other members of the Harmony Gompady, formed wbat was known as theGiseils Engine Company. Up to the very list he was active, j* -j |He was married twice. There are four children out of nine by his firstmarriage living.! They are Mrs. L. If. Atkinson, of Now York, and Dr.Samuel C Ayers, the latter supertn-tendentof the »w York High School; David Ayers, of Nsnsas City, and Mis. Sarah Robinson, of Watcbung avenge. Ha Is survived by one brother,Ayers, aged BT years, of Phliad His second marriage was to Mfs.
