American Homemakern IHoleas Purchasing AgentInfluences Family IncomeThe homemaker’s role as purchasing agent of the family is not an uncommon one.Since the American homemaker has a wider selection of goods and services than her counterparts throughout the world, her decisions are important. These decisions will greatly influence the family’s level of income.To emphasize the importance of this facet of the homemaker's role, the South Holland Homemakers club chose the topic I^ws and How Thev Fffect Home-makers” for the .Januarv lesson. leadersr:mfor the lesson topic were Mrs. Ralph Rengston and Mrs I .f Fisle.“A NUMBER of consumer protectionagencies have evolved over the years to help the consumer.” said Mrs. Rengston. ‘‘It is therefore the consumer’s responsibility to utilize the information available to protect herself ”She continued. ‘‘Since a law was passed in 1872 to protect consumers from frauds involving the use of the United States mail, much legislation has been enacted by the federal government to help the consumer. Recently there has been a great deal of controversy because of the uncoordinated maze of laws and agencies that sometimes work at cross purposes at the federal level.”A concerted effort on the consumer’s behalf was made in January 1%4 with the formation of the President’s Committee onConsumer Interests. Composed of representatives of 10 of the federal government agencies concerned with consumer affairs and 12 private citizens plus other federal agencies, the functions of the committee were:(1) Act as the consumer voice in the administration.(2) Coordinate consumer activities of government agencies.(3) Recommend legislation.f4) Facilitate communication on consumer affairs between government, consumers and business.f5) Act as an administrative ear for comments from individual consumers.(6 Promote consumer education(Continued on Page 10)
