THE ADA EVENING NEWSEast Central’s, ] annual midwinter band concert offers one of ! the golden opportunities of the year for music lovers. And, for those who don’t have strong preferences for martial music, it should be said: Just sit through the first number and then you're in!The concert opens with “The Rifle Regiment, one of the finest of the military music of John Philip Sousa, the “march king.” But from this point on, the strongest march beats left in the afternoon 3 re the rhythms of The Chocolate Soldier and Sine Nomine,” neither of which is generally thought to fall in the category of martial music.(Frankly, what’s wrong with a great and stirring march?)The program is broad and interesting. If the 196061 Tiger Band performs this repertoire capably, it is indeed a good band. And, we expect it to succeed.The program has variety for listening, at least one classic thrown in to demonstrate the band's ability, and the numbersare well arranged.This is the best band in LIijs area by far. naturally drawing from the hotter high school musicians of a wide section of Oklahoma. And this last concert before semester end is the choice of the season. We recommend it.East Central Stale College band, under the direction of Don Gant, will present its annua! winter concert this Sunday afternoon at 3 o’clock. The performance will be in the Science Hall auditorium. The band reached its post-war peak this fall. The concert band will number 68 musicians. This is the largest East Central band in many years.For the most part, the concert program is one of well known and loved compositions. Gant opens with characteristic flourish on Sousa’s compelling “The RifleRegiment “T h e Chocolate Soldier overture follows in a light but more symphonic vein. Then, the band plays the immortal Sleeping Beauty Waltz byTschaikowsky.One interesting adaptation will be Grieg's Laudsighting.” It was originally done for orchestra and male chorus. The choral parts have been adapted for trombone for the concert and should make for a forceful presentation, but one calling on the trombonists for a superior kind of playing.Music of the American composer MacDowell is included. If ♦Edward MacDowell’s usually delicate touch is preserved, the number would be fine indeed. No less than Mozart and Saint-Saens are included also.
