Exceptions to AppearAt Battle of the BandsSunday will probably never be the same after the Harvey Jay-cees present three nationallyknown groups in a combined concert-contest at the Thornton gymnasium Sunday, January 21at 1 p.m.The Exceptions, a versatile Chicago-born group that has appealed to all age groups, will be among professional entertainers appearing in concert at the Thornton gymnasium.Chicago disk jockeys like WLS’ Clark Weber and Art Roberts and WCFI/s Jim Stagg and Barney Pipp. who have worked teen hops all over the midwest, say the foursome has been doing sell-out business where ever they have appeared.Their ability to appeal to everyone is seen in their friendship and admiration by such great entertainers as Jack Jones. Oscar Brown. Jr.. and Jack E. Leonard who never missed a night when the group appeared at the PussycatLounge on Rush street.The Harvey Jaycees are sponsoring a Battle of the Bands contest featuring 10 amateur groups. Contestants will include: Roots of Evyll, Psychopaths, Cost of Living, Sounds of Never, Squires, World Terns, Knights Tymes, Leas Expected, Soul Serenaders, Lost Horizons and the Tropics. All the 10 groups are among the top amateur bands in the south suburban area.First prize in the contest will be $100, second prize will be $50 and third prize will be a trophy. Jaycees chapter President Glenn Dreesen said all members of the bands selected for first, second and third prizes will also receive trophies.Judging of the talent show will be based on musical talent, showmanship, appearance and audience appeal.Winners will be eligible to participate in the state contest,Dreesen said.
