Try reading this side hv side with the statements of the city fathers as they thwart the will of the people anent the firemen’s pay raise. If their statements make sense to you. please explain them to us . . . Saturday morning’s SUN front paged Gov. Laxalt’s forecast that we would have a state surplus “as high as $11 million,” for fiscal 6S-B9! The Guv added, “When one (surplus) is developed, it should be used for other needs, —” Whether it be city, county, state or nation, don’t you, as a taxpayer, feel that government has become a one way street?Ed Allison did call us from Carson City to say that Gov. Lax alt had turned down alt appointments to federal posts in order to fulfill his “four-year contract” with the people of Nevada. The Guv’s aide also asked us to correct the erroneous impression that Gov. Laxalt had personally selected the high school band that would represent Nevada at Washington. D C., in the Inauguration Day parade. WesternHigh’s Warrior Hand was selected by a committee which did not include the governor. Only three high schools, Elko, Ely and Western applied. A major consideration was the promise of the Western High Rand Rooters that they would “underwrite”Rundus and Lt. Gov. Ed Eike spearheaded the drive. Everyone helped, with the major assist coming from the Clark County ConventionCenter Authority.The Rooters are still a few thousand dollars short. This is another reason why Bobby Stevens and Co. are on their way to becoming superstars . . . Davis and Reese, currently creating happy havoc in the Sahara Casbar Lounge, are also “never-say-no’s” when the cause is good for the community . . . Leader Lee (“Bailey”) Greenwood, Dan Bradley, Pat Dowlen, Jimmy Manone, Bill Monigold and Al Parra, known collectively as the Mod Squad, tore up last year's SUN Youth Forum. “This Is My Woman”, their first Dot Record release, is a Jan. 11 Cash Box Mag “Newcomer Pick”.When a fellow record collector played Chick Webb’s “Harlem Congo” for us in the mid-1930’s, we were impressed with the wayChick and his men swung. We turned the Decca blue label recordo\er and fell in love. Our affection and respect for the young lady who sang “He's My Guy”, the song |n the other side, has deepened with the passing decades. She is lor female vocalists what George Herman Ruth was for baseball. Jack Dempsey was for boxing and Louis “Satehmo” Armstrong is for jazz: the epitome. There is Ella Fitzgerald, all by herself, then the others. Ella is a Most Happy Elia this time at the Flamingo. Ella’s co-star and master story-teller, Myron Cohen, is in superb form; Lawrence and Carroll are a delightful dance duo, and the top drawer Russ Black hand is at its inspired best, enhanced for Ella with Tommy Flanagan, piano, Frank do la Rosa, bass and Ed Thigpen, drums. Superlative doings, it is a must-go Flamingo show.Myron Cohen is as smooth, as poised, as fresh as ever. He and the Thurs. midnight audience which included the Delaneys, had a lovely time together. Myron told us after that this engagement is a reunion for the Mills Brothers and himself. They co-headlined at the Thunderbird in the late forties . . . No singing group sings any better than the Freres Mills as they perform their musical magic in the Flamingo Casino Theatre. Tommy Deering and his Inner Circle are there, too . . . Two of the better looking new young ladies in town are Glenda Grainger at Caesars Nero’s Nook and Beverlee Reed in the Sahara Casbar 1 ounge. Each sings as well as she looks. Need we say more0 Glenda closes Thursday. She ll be back. Beverlee filled in for Dean Jones (very well, too) on the Buddy Hackett show last Friday.“Pzazz ’68“ closed yesterday.
