W. RentsehlerSounds of the railroad and all the jargon that goes with it willbe just memories for Louis W.Rentsehler, Sr., 69, 717 AV. Green,who retired Friday, Jan. 8, withmore than half-a-century of railroading behind him.For the past 39 years Rentsehler has served with the Grand Trunk railroad, and for 12 years before that worked for the old DT M line. The DT M, or Detroit, Toledo and Milwaukee line, eventually combined with Michigan Central which in turn was made a part of the New York Central.Rentsehler started his railroading career at the age of 15, in June of 1908, working as a locomotive foreman for the DT M untilMarch of 1918.9After three years of carpentry work he again joined the the Grand Trunk at Battle Creek' as a truck operator, in the month of March in 1921. For the past 30 years Rentsehler has been receiving clerk at the Battle Creek yards.Rentsehler recalls the very hard winters of years ago. Severe winter weather and accompanying snowstorms used to leave the tracks drifted with snow, he recalls. One time, when running on the old DT M line, the snowplow on the front of the train was derailed and hurled into the ditch after striking a deepdrift.■ ♦.He also reminisces about the transition from the steam engines, used for so many years on the roads, to the big diesel engines oftoday.He likes to putter around tin garden in the spring and surame and is looking forward to that job He says; “I have got behind on m: fisiiing and will have to catch ui on that, too.A sports fan, he likes all of sports, and is especially in ed in TV.
