Because of a Piece That Is to Be Dedi cated to His Club. Dick Hungerford, president of the Augustian club, is highly pleased because of the publication of the following in the Sedalia Times of yesterday . Scott Joplin, the well known colored composer, is now working on a piece which he will dedicate to the ‘‘Augustian Club,’’ which is one of the swellest clubs in the city. The piece will consist of a com bination of dances, such as a waltz, march, polka, schottische and ‘‘rag,’’ and will require eight couples to make a square dance, and it will be danced in ‘‘rag time step.”’ There will be a song to the music of this dance, and as the song is sung the couples will dance to the words of the song. The ‘‘Augus tian Dance’’ will make a hit in this city and throughout the United States. It has been said by many of the professional musicians of the city, and all of those traveling through here, that Scott Joplin is the only writer of the original negro ‘‘rag time,’’ which has been a puzzle to the professors of New York, Chi cago and other eastern cities, the Mutual Life, of New York. He was born there, and resided in the community all his life, practic ing his profession for about thirty four years. He leaves a widow, three boys and one daughter.
