Duo scraps Ross Glen pub planBy KAREN KARBASHEWSKiMedicine* Ha! New;:A pub appeal has become too unappealing for 1 (utters Grant Sisko and Brent Greenstein who have dropped their fight to try to get city permission to build a pub in Ross Glen. The Municipal Planning Commission (MPC) granted a develo )ment permit fora pub at 881 Ross G en Drive S.E. to Greenstein and Sisko on Nov. 14 and two weeks later cancelled the permit, saying it was issued in error because commission members misunderstood a survey of neighbourhood residents done by the applicants.Sisko and Greenstein appealed the cancellation of the permit and a meeting of the appeal board to hear the issue was slated for Thursday noon, but cancelled Monday morning by the applicants.“We did everything they ever asked of us. You name it, they asked us tothis, we did it. They asked to do parking, we did it. They asked us to cut a bay down, we did it. They asked us to survey some people, we did it and then it was used against us. They didn’t say survey everybody, they said survey the neighbourhood/' said Sisko. In their initial application for the )ub, the pair produced a survey of 49 louseholds in the neighbourhood, which showed 44 households supported the pub, three were opposed and two were neither for or against.A survey conducted by city staff showed a lack of support from the neighbours for the eating and drinking establishment, and MPC revoked the permit.News the applicants asked for an appeal hearing prompted a flurry of paperwork to hit city clerk Larry Godin’s office as residents banded together, presenting a united front requesting the appeal board not revoke MPC s decision.“We have a three-inch file here (that would have gone) to the appeal board on Thursday and we did not have onesubmission thatconcurred with the development,” said GodinRoss Glen resident Donald Schaufele said the neighbours will be relieved the would-be pub owners have dropped their quest for a development permit, as an overwhelming majority of the residents didn’t want the drinking establishment in their area.“I think they can see there’s significant want not to have them there. We’re quite relieved.Unfortunately they can come hack every six months and make us go through the same hoops,” said Schaufele. The site is zoned C-2 Neighbourhood Commercial District and Schaufele said the neighbours are open to a number of commercial businesses going into the strip mall, including a variety of professional offices, hair salons or a take-out pizza operation. A liquor store for the mall has already received city approval.Sisko said while the pub is currently a dead issue, it may not be forever. He said there are six other neighbourhood pubs in the city and sees no reason why Ross Glen can’t also enjoy a similar business.“If we thought it would be a fair light, and it went step-by-step like it was supposed to, we’d go on. But this is costing us a ton of money to fight with a lawyer. Why win it and get everybody in the neighbourhood mad at me?” said Sisko.wmWhy win it and get everybody in the neighbourhood mad at me?- Grant Sisko
