MONSTER METEOR FALLS IN JOPLIN NEAR THE BOTTOMSCLOUD OF BRIL! A A NT FI FRYPARTICLES IN ITS TRAIL.Those Who Saw It rrhis Morning lescribe It as Not Unlike Ray ofI mmense Search light.Followed by a cloud of brilliantly illumined fiery particles, an unusuallylarge meteor, unheralded by the shining light* of astronomy, unceremoniously de-cended upon Joplin at 12:45 o’clock this morning, affording only belated pedestrians a glimpse in Its fast moving Might. The meteor is thought to have landed on the edge of the Kansas City bottoms.By those who saw it, it is described as a long shaft of light, not unlike the ray of an immense searchlight. It was proceeded by thousands of trailing particles, plainly visible. It landed with a dull thud.A meteor is a small body moving in space, and of the same nature as those which become visible by encounteringour atmosphere These bodies are numerous. A large proportion are concentrated in swarms; it Is considered very probable that a comet is only such a meteoric swarm.Among the few persons who saw the meteor last night was a young man who bad imbibed somewhat too freely. He was walking on Main street between Sixth and Seventh streets, when he stopped In astonishment as the ray of light shot across the heavens. Almost simultaneously he heard the chimes of a clock in the vicinity. In his opinion the world was surely coming to an end, which accounts for the reason that he bemoaned the fact that he allowed Sunday to leave Joplin without signing one of the personal Savior cards.D15 Below at Colorado Mines.Jcbi
