A Vigorous StartBefore we comment on Mayor S. A Magnacca's ambitious program foi ‘he 1962 council, we want to express, on behalf of this newspaper and, we trust, most Brandon citizens, sincere thanks to Mr. James Creighton for the years of devoted service as mayor of this community. Although we sometimes felt obliged to criticize his conduct of and at-ude to city business, we know, and the people of Brandon know, that he always meant well and did his best for the community’s benefit a- he saw it. His years at the helm will be remembered as the era of “our Jimmy” during which Brandon, almost in spite of itself, experienced a substantial population growth and had the distinction of having one of the most, if not the most, dapper mayors in the Dominion. It is reassuring to know that, serving now as alderman, his rich experience in civic affairs and his kindness in dealing with people arenot lost to our communityAs for the new' mayor, he may not come anywhere near in cutting the representative figure of his predecessor, but if his inaugural speech can be taken as an indication of things to come, we’ll have in the top office a man bustling with energy and bold plans. When a newcomer to politics assumes public office, it is prudent to \ lew his initial exuberance w’ith reserve and caution, for the sweep may be that of the proverbial new broom Judgment of Mr. Mag-tacca’s effectiveness should therefore await the testimony of his deeds. H.s flair for reforms and stress on immediate action, revealed in his inaugural address, are, however, refreshingly invigorating and may. we hope, prove infectious.
