Stony cenotaph better than everStony Mountain memorial to vets back in place after revampBY DARREN RIDGLEYThe brave soldiers of Stony Mountain who lost their lives in conflicts overseas will be paid tribute for many years to come now that the community's aging cenotaph has been rebuilt.The cenotaph, which had fallen into disrepair over the years, was taken down in early August of last year so that it could be fixed. Earlier plans to repair the former cenotaph were dashed when an investigation of the memorial showed that it was past the point of repair. Water damage from moisture seeping into the cenotaph through its flat roof, along with other cracks and forms of damage, had contributed to its deterioration.After it was determined that the land the cenotaph sat on was government-owned, the municipality became involved with restoring it. A three-person committee, consisting of Shirley Esaruk, RM of Rock-wood councillor Mark Hidlebaugh and a local veteran and Legion member who wished to remain anonymous, worked on restoring the monument.Now back in place at the corner of Prince St. and Memorial Blvd., the cenotaph is clearly new and improved: Wrapped in new stone, its plaques clearly bear the names of the community's veterans who fought in the First and Second World Wars, as well as Korea.There have been some new additions as well, with two flagpoles flanking the monument, flying the Canadian flag and the Manitoban provincial flag. There is still a little bit ofworkleft to do.“We are, for the most part, finished the cenotaph, Hidlebaugh says.“We are going to install another flagpole up at the cenotaph, and we're going to be planting some grass seed, or putting down sod next year, that will finish it off
