“Mata Hari”cvVCMata Hari” is the latest Greta Garbo picture, and therefore is a foreordained success. However, the story, based on the life of a World War spy, does not measure up to some of her other vehicles. The slim plot, which is familiar to most of us, deals with the love of a spy for a young lieutenant. In order to save his life she faces a firing squad. As an actress Greta is justly La Garbo, but as a temple dancer in Mata Hari” one would prefer she danced in the dark. Lionel Barrymore has always been a good actor, but in Mata Hari” he needed only some eggs to make ham and eggs. Ramon Novarro is pleasing in the role of the young lieutenant named Alexis, and Lewis Stone gives another fine performance as a leader of the spies. The most moving part of the picture is the scene in which Mata Hari forces Alexis to extinguish a candle which he deems his most sacred duty to keep burning under a statue of the Madonna. Although I did not find the scene sufficient cause to weep, it seemed to have that effect on Ramon Novarro, who sat with me at a previewof “Mata Hari.”vvrvXX1!Vrctt
