S.G. Little Sells Syndicate To LA Times-Mirror CompanyGeneral Features Corporation has been purchased by the Times Mirror Company, Los Angeles. The announcement was made in a joint news release made by S. George Little, president of General Features Corporation, and Norman Chandler, chairman of the board of the Times Mirror Company.General Features Corporation, New York City, the worlds leading independent newspaper syndicate, was founded 28 years ago by S. George Little, brother of the late W. D. Little.Little has been the president and chief executive officer of General Features Corporation since it started in 1939. He remains as chairman of the board at General Features.The company has pioneered in many phases of the syndicate business, with such writers as the late Frank Tripp, chairman of the Gannett Newspapers, who wrote a column for the syndicate for 17 years until his death. Jenkin Lloyd Jones, editor of the Tulsa Tribune, currently writes a similar column for it. Paul Harvey and Russell Kirk are also among their editorial page writers. They have a number of famous humorous features, including, “Today’s Chuckle,” which reportedly has wider distribution than any front-page newspaper feature ever published.The syndicate has developed many world-famous comicstrips and panels and important features on retirement, investing, health, all kinds of sports, science, astrology, food, social security, crossword puzzles, fashions, bridge, education, dress, needlework and woodwork patterns and house plans. In fact their list covers the entire field of self-help and home service features.The Times Mirror Company owns the Los Angeles Times and several other newspapers, book publishing companies, including The World Publishing Company of Cleveland and New American Library of New YorkCity, and several printing companies and newsprint mills.General Features Corporation, with sales representatives in 20 foreign countries, serves newspapers throughout the world with approximately 80 features.Little, a native of North Carolina, attended high school and college in Ada and came up through the ranks as a newspaperman and syndicate executive. At 18, he wrote sport news and sold advertising for theAda News while he was attending East Central here. He then attended the School of Journalism at Columbia University in New York City for two years, returning to Oklahoma for some special work onthe Oklahoman and Times. A few years later he started General Features Corporation in New York City. He is also Chairman of the Board of Fleet Publishing Corporation and Lindblad Travel Agency both inNew York City, and is president of Litmor Publishing Corporation, which publishes the Center Island Daily News in Hicksville, L.I. and four weekly newspapers in that area.Little was on leave from General Features Corporation for the last three years of World War II, serving as special newspaper consultant to the U.S. Treasury and directing public relations for the war bond program.S.
