%* The salmon fishermen on Penobscot bay and river will petition the Legislature this winter asking that a bounty be paid for killing seals with a view to their extermination. The seal is a gā-eat devourer of fish, especially salmon, and as it has little or no commercial value compared with salmon, the -fishermen think their extermination would prove a blessing. There is a law which protects the seal in the vicinity of Fort Point, and also at points in Casco bay. This law was made in the interest of summer hotels as it was thought the seals disporting themselves about the ledges are an attraction.
