Wood, or some other patron saint, we have, forgotten j which. From eight o’clock titi ten the* k iE I v □ ' K3’ p ri: people came in, two by two, and when t the music struck up. the whole hall was filled with fair maidens and gallantyouths. Everybody seemed to enjoy, from the little girl, just learning the steps of tho waltz, to the elderly gen-! tleman, whose hair was whitened by f the snows of many winters. Suddenly there came a hush, while in low tones were heard the whispers. “Is it twelve o'clock. The chronometers would notf| ’ 4V i-wt9Zi « r P magree and so they waited'until the tower hell of the Lutheran Church, tolled the old year out and the new year in. Then there arose a shout from hundreds of throats, of Promt S~en-issf fat ^ Cy *• fl {ijnhr, and for a while. Bedlam seemed , iei loose. Such a jolly, jostling, laugh-iug, loud crowd can seldom be seen-CZ' 7Personal dislike and enmity were for-w#gotten, mirth-and happiness reignedsupreme. Everybody wished tng^y-body a “Happy New Year,” and no- j bodv ceased shaking hands with anv-body until the suppevf bell called them• «from pleasure to refreshments.Mr. Reuss had taken charge of thesupper and it was a good one too, so« * *good, in fact, that many tarried long | at the festive board, in spite lt;?f the attractions on the floor.The old folks went home late at night but the rising generation were of'better stuff and remained till early in the morning. Not until the “sun slu lieover the mountains,” did they deem it advisable tQ retire to their couches.Taken all in all, the New Years dance was a perfect success and we hope that the good feeling manifested by the many well-wishes will continue i throughout the year.
