CARDOZA The Greenville Symphony Orchestra performed Saturday night for a highly appreciative audience The entirely orchestral program was auite varied, satisfying many diverse perferences in symphonic music, and featuring several truly outstanding instrumentalists, as well as aSchoolsIn the early spring of the year the Greenville Symphony Orchestra goes “on tour presenting ten concerts in five school districts of MercerCounty. This year the concerts take place on tomorrow and Wednesday in Reynolds, Jamestown, Mercer, Greenville and Commodore Perry schools.The schedule is very tight with little time between appearances It is as follows: March I-Reynolds two concerts. 8:15 and 9:15 a.m.; Jamestown one concert, 10:40 a m ; Mercer two concerts, 1:30 and 2:15 p.m.March 2 - Greenville — three concerts, 8:30, 9:30, and 10:15 a m.; Commodore Perry - two concerts, 1:15 and 2 p.m.Ivan Romanenko, music director and conductor of the Greenville Symphony Orchestra, has arranged a program suitable to all grades Brad Mansell, cellist and a senior at Hickory High School, will be featured as soloist in a sonata for cello and strings by VivaldiMrs Harry Pedicord, Sym phony Society president, will narrate the various numbers from a script prepared by Assistant Coneertmaster LillianMehr.The program includes Dance of the Comedians from “The Bartered Bride” by Smetana. Allegro from the Concerto Grosso. Geminianr, Overture from “Abduction from Seraglio, Mozart, Finale. Symphony No 4, Tschaikowskv, Finale,Capriccio Fspagnol, Korsakoff,Selections from My Fair 1-ady;Nadia's rheme from the Young and the Restless and Americans We, March by Fillmore Community musicians volunteer their time for these concerts and members of the Women’s Auxiliary to the Symphony volunteer for a whole day of substitute teaching without pay for those teachers playing with the orchestra These concerts are supporlea through the PennsylvaniaCouncil of the Arts, a nominalsum from each school district and the Music Performance Trust Fund of the Greenville Musicians Unionchestra since conductor Ivan Romanenko’s coming to Greenville 10 years ago seems always to be moving forward.Opening with the Concerto Grosso, Op. 3, No. 6 by Francesco Geminiani. the evening began with a rarely heard butthoroughly enjoyable work The interplay between soloists Coneertmaster Carmen Romanenko, Marie Halliday (violins) and Henrietta Voyvodich (cello) highlighted this number, and though the work as a whole was unfamiliar to many, it was well received, j Haydn’s more familiar Symphony No. 99 in E. Flat Major followed — a work in which the orchestra played the varied movements with perfect response to the conductor’s baton Nothing is more appreciated by any audience than communication between orchestra and conductor so complete that they perform as one; the musical nuances are inevitably vivid and alive With two selections of a comparably soothing nature behind, Capriccio Fspagnol, Op 31 by Rimsky-Korsakov, with its brilliant orchestration and impassioned Spanish sound, gave a complete turn-about of mood Calling on virtuosoperformances from individuals as well as sections, this much beloved masterpiece showed once again how much our local | symphony instrumentalists have improved over the years.
