Gardner is in critical condition today at Lawrence Memorial Hospital, where he is being treated for a fractured skull, a collapsed lung, a broken clavicle and two broken arms He was the driver of a pickup truck carrying Karan S. Treas,15, Gardner; Chris E Banning, 15, Gardner; and Becky S. Cummins, 16. Edgerton, when it collided on a county road with a semi-trailer truck.THE ACCIDENT occurred at 12:50 p.m about 8.1 miles south of K-10 highway on the Eudora-Baldwin blacktop.State trooper Robert Leahew said the Neal vehicle ran a stop sign on a gravel road and collided with the truck driven by E.L. Fulks, 41. Eudora.The pickup truck snapped the brake line on the semi and became caught on the right front tandem axle. It was dragged 115 feet from the point of impact, but all occupants of the pickup were thrown clear The semi traveled another 1,014 feet down the blacktop before it could be stopped. The driver and a passenger in the semi, Philip R Foster, 24, Eudora. were reported uninjuredTHE FOUR teenagers weretaken to Lawrence Memorial Hospital by Douglas County Ambulance.Banning, Miss Treas and Miss Cummins were in fairly goodcondition todav.The spokesman for Gardner High School said the youths were not in school Thursday.Miss Cummins told the Journal-World today the grouphad no particular destination in m ind.“We were just out driving around,” she said.
