As an institution it has not been greatly favored in Little Rock since the reform element began several years ago to clean up the city.,11 But the presence of the military camp^ and the thousands of soldiers in the e^y seeking amusement to relieve the tedium of hsilitary duty demandeddance halls, pool halls and other comparatively unobjectionable kinds of recreation.And so the dance hall was given the seal of police approval, with reservations on the part of some that it was done only in the interest of the soldier and not as a permanent policy.The halls have been run under police and military supervision, and an ef-fore has been made to keep them respectable. But of late there have been a great %nany compldints. The police have been kept busy maintaining order and clarifying the morals of the j jui dance-hall habitues. In some in-1 1stances, conditions have becomw very qu bad, and it went so far that the grand of jury took cognizance of the situation, bei started an investigation, and notified I bm the City that something must be done am to remove the objectionable features. I IIt is probable that the public pool hui hall will be the next objective of | the those who would clean up the morals of the city. While sdHfe of these halls are conducted in an orderly manner, they are known among the police, in many instances, as hang-outs for thieves, dips, boot-leggers and dissolute characters generally.
