JOPLIN CAGE STAR INTO TRAINING AS AVIATOR FOR NAVY\ — -Don Sturdy, 23-year-old basketball star classed by many coachesas one of the best cagers developed in the Four-State district, played his last game as a civilian here last night and was scheduled to leave late today for Kansas City to begin preliminary training as a naval aviator.The former Pittsburg Teachers* college all-conference guard was a potent factor in the championBON STURDY*Long-Bell quintet's victory over the Open League All-Stars on the Y. M. C. A, court last night, the game probably marking his last in this section of the country for the duration of the war.The son of Mr. end Mrs. J. C. Sturdy, 716 Sergeant avenue, Don gained his early basketball experience as a member of a Joplin high school team, one year being chosen as a member of the all-state quintet.Following his graduation from high school in 1936 he spent one year at the University of Missouri, where he played on the freshman team, and the next three years starred for the Pittsburg college cagers. He not only gained recognition es an all-conference guard while a member of the college squad, but last year was chosen as all-tournament guard at the annual Oklahoma City tourney in competition with some of the best players in the midwest.Most of the time this season he was a member of the strong Kansas City police team in the Naismith league, joining up with Joplin's Long-Bell squad recently before being called into service.Sturdy will receive his preliminary aviation training at Fairfax field in Kansas City, and later will be transferred to a naval air base.
