Or '17769 at White HotiseWASHINGTON (AP) — The entire cast and company of the patriotic Broadway musical “1776” moved into the White House on George Washington’s Birthday in a command performance for President Nixon.The play celebrates the famous characters of 1776—such as John Adams, Thomas Jefferson and Benjamin Franklin.The rollicking opening number set the scene of a brawling day in May in Philadelphia with Adams, played by actor WilliamDaniels, exhorting the “do nothing” Continental Congress to vote yes on the Declaration of Independence.“I have come to the conclusion,” said Adams, “that one useless man is called a disgrace, that two are called a law firm and that three or more become a Congress.”The performance was a full, uncut two-hour and 20-minute showing, one of the few times a play in its entirety has been presented at the White House. Itwas the second in a series of cultural Evenings in the White House” that Nixon has launched.The show was squeezed into the East Room stage, two-thirds the size they're used to, and witha packed audience of about 220 persons.1e Nixons, Vice President Agnew, Senate Majority Leader Mike Mansfield, D-Mont., and the governor of neighboring Virginia, IJndwood Holton, led the VIP audience.
