After waitingfor a reasonable time* it was derided to turn out the lights and go home. Alderman Adler, Follins ,,nd Macdonaldiirc* out of the c ity and for some reason the other aldermen failed to show up.The failure to hold the special meet-i ing last night is looked upon with some alarm by those who ate anxious for the city to take some action in the matter of the splendid gift of Mrs. Hearst of the Hearst free library. The meeting last evening was railed for the express and sole purpose of advancing the ordinance, introdu ed at the* last meeting of the council hy Alderman farriher, providing for the acce ptance of the library. The city attorney is authority for the statement that it is necessary to pass an ordinance providing for the* acceptance and then submit it to a vote of the people. Such an ordinance was introduced at the* last regular meeting of the council and the meeting last night was for the purpose of taking action on it so that it might be* published and be ready to submit at the spring election, whichtakes place in April. There is barelytime to do all that the lawyers claim is necessary, and as the* expense of holding a special election is great it is hoped that the necessary preliminaries can be arranged so that the question can be submitted and passed upon.Mayor Frinke did not say that another special meeting would be called, but it is presumed that there will be something done before the next regular meeting of the city council. From expressions heard in different parts of the city it would seem that thepeople are all of one mind as to the acceptance of the library, provided some up-to-date plan for its future maintenance is adopted. '1 his. is itbelieved, the city council will experience no difficulty in doing, and the only fear is that it may be delayed too long.
