SouthwesthappeningsBy AMY DIETZFebruary is one of the “slow” months of the year because most everyone is getting itchy for springtime and outdoor activity to arrive . . . well, the arts in our great Southwest are just the answer to your sluggish February! The quality and variety of art activity in our area will amaze you!This is the last week for you to view “Watercolor: New Mexico”, an exhibition at New Mexico State University. The showing of 50 watercolors will close Friday at the university gallery, so drop in and see it if you’re in l^s Cruces.If you’re in the mood for some good music, try El Paso! Ixjs Indios Tabajaras, Brazilian guitarists who will perform Latin American and Classical music, will appear at 8 p.m. March 1 and 2 at the Chamizal Theater. A Chamber Music recital at the Fine Arts bldg. recital hall at UTEP will begin at 2:30 p.m. March 2. For the book enthusiast, a book fair will be held from 1 to 5 p.m. March 2 at 320 E. Yandell by the National Council of Jewish Women. The Sun City has what you need!On the dramatic scene, your best bet this week will be in Las Cruces where Henrik Ibsen’s compelling drama, “A Doll’s House” will be staged by the NMSU Playmakers.The play wall be open March 3 and run through March 9 at the Univerity Theatre. It was first performed in 1879 in Norway and scandalized Europe for its ringing attack against the subjection of women . . . go see it!!All of you Lawrence Welk lovers ... get ready, he’s coming to Pan American Center in Las Cruces March 7! Tickets for the 8 p.m. spectacular are $4 to $B and may be purchased at Chappell Music in Alamogordo.Included in his show will be Henry Cuestra, a Mexican American who began his musicial career as a classical violinist at age seven; Bobby Burgess and Cissey King, favorite dance team of the Welk family; Arthur Duncan.talented singer and dancer with the Welk troop; lovely songstress Gail Farrell, one of the new additions to the group; and many, many more Welk favorites ... in fact, the Maestro’s entire television cast! Don’t miss the show . . . it’ll be “vunderful!”Entry forms for the 1975 Southwest Crafts Biennial are available now, and slides of artists’ work must be submitted by March 14 to the Museum of International Folk Art. The Biennial exhibit opens June 8 and will continue through Sept. 2. Artists are invited to apply for awards of up to $5,000 each by March 17. To qualify for an award, a candidate must be an artist of regional reputation and have an annual income of less than $15,000.
