If anything is buzzing at Garden City Community College, it’s the happenings in the fine arts building.The vocal and instrumental music, forensics and drama departments have been busy adding entertainment and life to the campus.The vocal and instrumental music department had the first concert of the semester Feb. 10. The concert band, jazz band, college singers, the college choir, and several solo/ensemble groups performed crowd pleasing and entertaining numbers.The focus of the concert was Valentine’s Day, as could be seen byclothing worn in all shades of red.It was truly a great concert. The next concert for the vocal department is May 13.BUFFALO BEATErin StubblefieldMeanwhile, the forensics team has been competing since the beginning of the semester. They travel to tournaments almost every weekend.Just this last weekend, they traveled to Oklahoma City Mark Jarmer, the forensics coach, has been very supportive and opti mistic of the team’s abilities this season This weekend the team has another tournament and hopes to return with a win.One of the most popular aspectsof the drama department is the student directed one-act plays.That time has come again, and the auditions were held last week.IdaMarie Hansen is directing the play Voices by Richard Lortz The play is about a mentally disturbed woman who is having trouble accepting the death of her son. It is a very dramatic play starring students Jon Sutherland, Shannon Phifer, Dawn, Ashley and AutumnPittillo, Britton Burr, Kayla Whitley and Kiley Luckett.The next play takes a completely different twist. It’s a comedy by Anton Chekov called “A Marriage Proposal.” Jason Hagen directs this play, and he describes it as Newton’s Law of Marriage: anything that can or will go wrong does.” Jon Sutherland also stars in this play along with AlyssaBrockert and David Erwin.Brandi McCollough directs the last of the one-acts. This play is a dark comedy with a deep, hidden meaning. Written by Edward Albee, “The Sandbox” stars Allison Sosa, Dawn Pittillo, Trey Fannin and John Swan.The times for the plays are still to be announced, but rest assured, they will be terrific.The Garden City CommunityCollege campus is more than academics and athletics. It has a humorous side that the Fine Arts Building brings out.Entertainment, music and acting that transpires behind the walls of this building, adds character and personality to an alreadyvibrant campus.Come and see what’s happening out here. It’s unforgettable.
