Scoring drought spoils UCI's bid for an upsetBIG WEST: The Ant-eaters go without a field goal for 82 minutes and succumb to Pacific, 66-43.By ALAN ABAIRThe Orange County RegisterIRVINE — UC Irvine gave first-place Pacific a game for the first 28 minutes Saturday night, but then its offense disappeared.Trailing by one point with 12:46 left, the Anteaters went 5! minutes without scoring and minutes without a field goal as the Tigers turned it into a laugher and posted a 66-43 Big West Conference victory in front of 2,557 at the Bren Center.“We had it close, then we didn’t score for a lifetime it seemed like,” UC Irvine coach Pat Douglass said. “We couldn’t buy a basket.”The Anteaters (8-16, 5-9), who have lost eight out of 10 after starting the conference 3-1, dropped into a three-way tie for second with Long Beach State and Cal State Fullerton. Either UC Santa Barbara (7-16, 4-9) or Cal Poly SLO (11-14,4-9 and ineligible for the Big West Tournament ) will also be tied for second after they play today.Irvine, hoping to avoid missing the conference tournament for the second consecutive year, finishes the regular season this week with road games at UC Santa Barbara and Cal Poly SLO. The top four finishers in each division qualify for the tournament, March 6-8 in Reno, Nev.
