COM MITTEES.A big hearing was had before the committee on shore fisheries. It was the oldthreadbare question of regulating the fishing by purse and drag seines, and while the specific teriitoiy under discussion is Casco Bay near llarpswell, it opens up the question of porgie fishing in nearly all the waters of Maine. In the old days the three mile limit was the bone of contention^ now it is the method ofifishing. II. S. Hamilton of Cheheague appeared against petition of George L. Skolfield and others that seine fishing in Casco Bay, near Harpswell, be prohibited.Sargent of Sedgwick spoke in favor of taking alewives with dip nets in certain 'parts of Bagaduce river.Elmer P. Spofford appeared in favor of putting close time on clams in Hancock county. The cl^m packing business in Maine amounts to nearly hall a million a year and the growth has caused danger to supply. All parties interested in Hancock county are agreed on proposition to put close time on clams from June i to Oct. i. Ifagenerallaw is passed Hancock county people will be satisfied to have the matter settled in that wav.
