Fred Douglass.Washington, Feb, 20.—Fn terek Douglass, the noted freed man, oratorand diplomat, died a few minutes before 7 o’clock tonight, at his residencein Auacostia, a suborb of this cii/, of heart failure. His death wa entirelyunexpected, as he has been enjoying F.lt; best of health. During the afternoon i he attended the convention of *h women of the United States, now in v-w ress in this city, and chattt lt;1 with ■ a-an B. Anthony, and other loading ua .a tiers, with whom lie had be*'U on inti-matt; terms for many years. When hi returned home he said nothing of anjfeeling of illness, though he expressedhimself as being a little exhausted fromthe climb up the stairs leading from tin.street to Ins house, which is on a highterrace. He sat down and chatted withhis wife about the women at the convention, telling of various things thathad been said and done. Suddenly be gasped, clasped his hands to his heart and fell back unconscious. A doctor was hastily summoned, and arrived within a very few moments, but his efforts to revive Mr. Douglass were hopeless from the first. Within twenty minutes after tin* attack the faint motion of the heart ceased entirely, and the great ex-slave statesman was dead.
