Interesting Programs DAR February MeetMrs. Arthur Kath, chairman of District 4 Good Citizen contest reported 26 high schools of the district had entries at the meeting of the Bemidji Chapter of Daughters of the American Revolution held at the Edwin Nathe home Monday.The national winner of the Good Citizens contest receives an $1800 scholarship to the college of her choice and the state gives each district winner a free trip to the conference in Minneapolis where they are entertained at a banquet and tours of the city. The state awards are $100, $50 and $25 for first, second and third place winners.Mrs. W. C. Budge spoke on “Old Sea Piracy and Privateers’’ for the program of the day. She explained that pirates took everything they could and in whatever manner while the privateer was commissioned by thegovernment to plunder the enemy ships. The privateer force at the time of the Revolutionary War comprised more than a 1000 ships To illustrate Mrs. Budge re lated the stories of Capt Kidd, Bluebeard and Jear LaFitte.A poem written by Lin coin at the age of 37 and a comparison o' Stephen Douglas and Lincoln’s Gettysburg address were given by Mrs. Nathe.Mrs. Kath reviewed Rachel Carson’s “Si lent Spring, the criticism of the book by the Farm Journal and the methods being studied by scientists to make the sprays less dangerous.The state conference was announced for March 7, 8 and 8 at the Pick-Nicollet hotel, Minneapolis. Mrs. Robert Swenson, regent, and Mrs. Arthur Kath were appointed delegates.
