W. J. Stiers, of Eugene, Lane j county, Oregon, is visiting his sister, Martha Swails, of this city, after an absence from Indiana of 41 years.A representative of the New Era had a brief interview with this ex-Hoosier and Union soldier, and found Mr. Stiers an entertaining conversationalist. He left Indiana for the far west in 1860 and settled in the Willamette Valley, Oregon where the temperature ranges from 4 to 60 degrees the year round— where they get the warm Japan Current from the Pacific ocean— where the ground Is not guilty of freezing over one inch in thickness in winter.Mr. Stiers was bora in Rush eoun-| fcy, in 1830, and is a brother of Mis. [Sarah Parker, S. M., Daniel, Lewis land Jacob Stiers of Grant county. He visited a brother and sister en-route from Oregon, John N. Stiers, of Havana, Missouri, and Mrs. Malinda Smisor, of Webster county, Iowa.We were much pleased with the pen picture he gave of Oregon and Washington in regard to climate, soil, vegetable and fruit productions, abundance of game and fish, fine timber and regular bearing of apple, pear, peach, prune, grape and small fruits.This old Hoosier is making a farewell visit to relatives and friends, before returning to his home on the Pacific slope.
