MONDAY, FEBRUARY 19, 1923MORE BAND TALKA good deal of discussion regarding the band situ-• lt;f a.'- , *. ■ .i'.. - *»-• r- .lt; ’-3- - » • ... »*■ * . « • . • . * yW/1ation in Fairfield was provoked by a recent editorial inthis paper and the interest in the situation is increasing. Many differene opinions have been expressed, and there are widely varying viewpoints. It seems to be generally held, however, that thereshould be but one band, if the greatest results ar to beaccomplished. But which band, and how this is tocome about, are the questions that are puzzling. The military element, of course, holds that the 133rdregiment organization ha., b; all odds the best of theargument, pointing out the , pport that comes toit. The partisan of this ha. argue that if the localsupport were pu trongly I nd the regii ntal musicians and added to tho raon tlu comes from thestate o regimental hand wui, d multiply its fame andbe an outstanding musical aggregation. But differences have urist-i over the «.iter of enlistments, and w'hat is considered inequalities, and these differences are held to involve principles. he resultis that there is not unqualified support of , lt;*33rd regiment band here. The friends of th« Unkrich band also „ their arguments for a aei irate organization, and must be heard. There are musicians outside both of these bands whohave still other tales to tell, and the result is that matters are very much t odds and the chance for concilia-t on and merger seems remote. There is a fe* 'big among those who are not directlyinvolved that thesv eganizaiions ought to compose theirdifferences and form a merger that would receive undivided support. But the situation at this time does notprom se any sult; action soon. The differences are toodeep rooted and the factors have values that cannot be lightly assessed. The probability is that the differences will continueand that they will grow In intensity. Bands are likelyto spring up and competition become keen, until finally the situation becomes intolerable and from sheer weariness and futility the bands all will go to pieces. Then after a time one band can spring up, supported by a taxtnd by a united sentiment with a junior departmentfrom which young players will graduate into the senior band. This, a good many folks who have given the matter?areful thought believe would be the ideal arrangement. But it hardly vrill come until we spend several yearsin competition and misunderstanding and working atodds. These will not be wasted years, although they willbe lost years or at least years not profitably spent inmusic, but if it takes two or three years they will be wellspent. For after all, there is more to a band than merelymusic, it is an expression of our musical ideals and asymbol of our ability to work together in unity and forcommonand keeping our thoughts on the higher interests of theimmunity.mI
