Volume 2ArliiFEB. 9 IS LAST RUN OF MILWAUKEE RR BRANCHWednesday, Feb. 9, marked the last run of the 519 on a branch of the Milwaukee Road which goes between Jackson Junction and Hopkinton and left without rail service are the towns of Waucoma, Hawkeye, Fayette, Arlington, Strawberry Point, Edgewood, Greeley, Earlville, Delaware, and Delhi.This completed a milestone in history that began for Arlington (formerly Brush Creek) on July 8, 1873, when it received its first carload of freight.The last train “down” was no different from many, many, that had traversed its rails during recent years. Behind the engine of the 519 were five freight cars, a flat car, and a caboose.Those who were familiar with its schedule watched a little more closely about noon when it was due and silently, or with an extra wave of the arm, greeted it farewell. Trainmen in return, made their extra toots” and also waved a little longer. (In addition to highway crossing whistle warnings, trainmen had a “special toot” and greeting for friends they had gained along the way throughout the years. At night fhfcy waved a flashlight beam from the caboose.)Dogs will no longer have to howl at the whistle of the train in the distance and vehicles can hit the tracks a little harder.
