A SURE SIGN OF SPRING — The Modern Minstrel Show is back again and it’s time to get tickets early while the supply lasts. Slated for three nights and one afternoon, the program promises to be “all new” and “all fun.” In past years, it has played to capacity crowds and the 1971 version should be no exception. Sponsored by the Lions Club and City Band, proceeds are used for the visually handicapped and civic projects. (Snively Photo)Modern Minstrel Show Again Planned Here This SpringA completely new Modern Minstrel Show, once again designed to delight thousands and raise funds for community projects, will be presented in the Junior High School Auditorium here in March.Rehearsals are well underway and tickets now are available for the four performances March 24. 25, 27 and 28, with the final show slated as a 2 p.m. Sunday matinee.Sponsored once again by the Monroe Lions Club and the Monroe City Band, proceeds will be used to help the visually handicapped, to equip the Twining Park Bandshell with more adequate lighting and for a variety of other civic achievements.In the past, much of the money was used to construct the unique Swiss-style outdoor theater at Twining Park and to help rebuild it after the tornado of 1965.Using the professional talentsof Allan F. Barnard, longtime band director in Monroe, and his wife, Naomi—the two organizations have spent hundreds of hours in preparation for the comedy-musical program.The end men will be back with their favorite interlocutor, Chuck Figi. They include Charles Mathias, Archie Myers, Forrest Kubly, J. T. lt;Duke) Etter Dr. Robert Smith and William Gyure.Featured entertainment number of the show’ will be “Egyptian Ella,” with the overendowed Don Siedschlag in the exciting role of “Ella.” This performer will be backed up with another group of local “beauties,” and Bob Glennie turns up as the Pasha. Glennie is growing a special beard for the occasion.The fast-action of the show is backed up with music by the Stage Band and a large chorus of vocalists. It will end on apatriotic note after an evening of fresh comedy which has become traditional.Mrs. Barnard has been busy, not only with the script but in training the dancers, ordering costumes, selecting characters for special parts, checking on the stage band accompaniments and for the chorus and soloists. Bob Buehler is stage and business manager, in addition to being a soloist.Others who will take vocal spotlights include William Rollins, Figi, Kubly, Etter, Dr. Smith, Gyure, Allan Holt-shopple and Lloyd Siedschlag. along with many surprises.Posters are up and tickets can be obtained now at the Commercial and Savings or First National Banks, Ruf’s Confectionery, Benkert’s Men’s Store, G. Stuart’s Men’s Shop or from any Lions or City Band member. All seats are reserved.
