By PATRICIA McCAFFERTYSun StaffTEWKSBURY - It may not be avacation in Hawaii, but it’s free.WAAF, a Worcester radio station, is sponsoring a contest in which the runner-up is treated to a weekend for two in Tewksbury.Tewksbury? That’s right, a weekend in a Greater Lowell suburb many would not consider a prime vacation spot. And, according to the station’s promoters, the only thing that can top that is the grand prize” - an afternoon for two in Tewksbury. We figured an afternoon is all there is and by the weekend you’d have done it all,” said Steve Stockman, WAAF’s promotion director. You know it (Tewksbury) has a limited amount of entertainment value. Although it’s a nice place to live, I wouldn’t want to visit there,” he joked. The contest is a promotional gimmick for Bob and Doug McKenzie, aCanadian comedy team, who spoof the dialects and ways of their homeland in a recently-released album,The Great White North.”The duo, known from the Second City TV program, not broadcast in Boston, brought its zany brand of comedy to the WAAF studios Friday. While traveling in the area one day, some WAAF staffers noticed a sign for Tewksbury which reminded them of the Toques” (pronounced Tewks), a knit hat, which the McKenzies refer to in their album. We felt that Tewksbury would be very amusing to tie into the record which is a big hit,” Stockman said.Although the trip to Tewksbury is considered a joke, the lucky winners of the weekend will be treated to dinner, entertainment and a stay in ’Tewksbury’s finest inn,” at WAAF’s expense, Stockman said.A WAAF disc jockey will also go along as a chaperone. They will all draw straws and the loser will have to accompany the couples to Tewksbury, Stockman said. The station has been receivingtons of entries” to the contest via postcards sent to its Worcester office, Stockman said. The winners will be drawn at random on Feb. 22.WAAF promoters had hoped that Fire Chief William Chandler would give the keys to the town to the winners, but the chief would have no part of the plan.Chandler told The Sun he thought the WAAF staffer was a prank caller, since he is not familiar with the radiostation.I thought it was some clown pulling my leg. I told him I wasn’t interested,” he said.Besides the Tewksbury trips, the station is also giving away ski bikes, WAAF take-off tee-shirts and copies of the The Great White North”album. And, the winners will not be able to opt for one of those prizes in lieu of a Tewksbury hiatus. If they win, they’re going to Tewksbury even if we have to drag them. It’s a game ... you have to take risks,” Stockman said.”t::’:nan said he hopes the residents of Tewksbury will be good sports” about the contest and take it in the good-natured way it was intended.I’d hope they’d be pleased. We are promoting the name of Tewksbury. But if they’re not, it’s okay,” he said.»
