Emporia Boy Scout History Recalled at Troop 153 Meeting 1This week marks the 50th anni- I versary year of the founding of I the Boy Scouts of America. The t first troop in Emporia was organ- ( ized in October, 1912, at the Arun- , del Avenue Presbyterian Church. } W. W. Parker, then serving his first sterm as probate and juve- \ ni!e court Judge, was one of the * first scoutmasters and counselors ? here. ‘These and many other interest- j ing facts about Boy Scouting in y Emporia were presented Thursday j night at Troop I53*s dinner pro- cgram at the First Presbyterian j Church. The principal speaker was q a former Scoutmaster, James W. \ Putnam. Material on Boy Scout history in Emporia has been com- \ piled by Everett Grimes, 1010 Exchange St., another veteran in \ Scouting work. By 1913 there were n six troops in Emporia, and Earl Staats became the First Eagle Scout in 1914.The program was opened by 11 group singing and an accordion L selection played by Linda and a Terry Nelson.
