Miller Ties 3-Point Record As Tyrone Tops P-O 84-82Bv KERRY NAYLOR Daily Herald Staff WriterPHIUPSBURG — Maying in a program that traditionally produces some of the best guards in the area, Tyrone senior Rachel Miller played as well as any of them last night with a record-setting performance at Phi I ipsburg-Osccola.Miller nailed a school-record -tying seven three-pointers and scored a game-high 33 points in the LadyEagles' 84-82 overtime win over the Lady Mounties.Miller's seven threes tied a record set by Gendic Haverstein against Lebanon in December of 1993, while her 33 points tied her for second place on the school's all-time single-game scoring list with Nic DelBaggio and Ashley Norris.Rachel was incredible, said Tyrone coach Jim Swaney. She played as well as any guard we've ever had and that includes girls like Ashley Norris and Sarah Grazier. She fust made everything in sight.The win improved Tyrone's record to 6-15 and dropped P-O to 11-11. The game was a makeup of a postponed first-cycle Mountain League contest, giving both teams a 4-4 record.In all, Miller connected on nine shots from the floor and eight of nine from the foul line. Her hot 9hooting was contagious as teammate Katie Mease scored a career-high 26 points to go along with 21rebounds, also a career nigh.Meanwhile, Philipsburg-Osceolaguard Kate Franks led her squad with32 points. Threeother players from both teams scored in double figures.Swaney, whose team has managed only 48 points a game this season while surrendering 53, recognized the irony of last night's offensive show.All year, our offense has been the problem and the defense hasn’t been, said Swaney. Last night, defense was a little bit of a problem.In the end, it was a little bit of both that sealed the game for Tyrone. The Lady Eagles went on a 16-8 run through the overtime period and led 84:76 with 21 seconds left before P-O added some late foul shots and a three-pointer just before the buzzer.Swaney was pleased his team could pull out a win in a venue that's been tough for Tyrone throughout the 199Cs.We've had some really goof teams that have gone up thereand struggled, saidSwaney.
