UANO«SON DAILY BULLETIN frfrby, Sbruory 12, 1982___A Review'Colored Girls' comes alivewith strong, local performersBy JANICE CHAVERS Bulletin Staff Writer Editor’s note This review is of dress rehearsal of Poetry-ln-Motion’s production of “For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide/When the Rainbow is Enough ” The choreopoem will be presented today and Saturday at 7:38 p.m and Sundav at 4 p m in the\nderson City Auditorium.Don't let the title fool you For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When the Rainbow is Enuf” is not just for colored girls It’s for alot of people The production is a choreopoem.which is something new for most Anderson audiences A choreopoem is a fusion of poetry and prose inter spersed with a little dancing andmusicThis particular choreopoem tellsone woman's view of the women of herrace, facing everything from rape tounrequited love To tell the story, eachwoman in the production is a certaincolor, which is indicative of hercharacter's mood and behavior All the women in the cast givestrong performances m their rolesThey know their lines well and their voices exude with passion and drama One gets the impression the women truly are feeling the emotions they are acting Realism abounds Again, the whole cast is extremely good But one of the best perform ances of the evening was offered by Gelena Bostic-Perry as the Lady in Red She’s so dramatic, giving her role everything she’s got.The talented actress also handles a variety of emotions well She is every thing from fiercely angry devastated Her world literally falls apart in one poem, and Perry ’s acting is so good that the viewer almost forgets it’s a choreopoemBecause of the good acting jobs and the brilliant script by Ntozake Shange. viewers can experience a variety of emotions themselves The emotions felt will depend on the individual experiences of the person As a woman, the reviewer was moved by poems titled Somebodv Almost Walked Off Wid Alla My Stuff.” Abortion Cycle,” Latent Rapist, “Toussaint andSorrv There’s a lot of food for thought in all the material. These women totally unveil themselves in the poems, shar mg their character’s deepest emotions and beliefs, some of which are contro versial They simply present reality; it’s the viewer’s role to deal with that reality.Some people may not like every thing they hear, they may be offend ed But reality isn’t always pretty And nothing us used in thus production to disguise it. It’s always there And it’s so realThere also us some sharp dancing by cast members in the poem And there’s a poem, where there’s a nice collaboration between an interpretive dancer, Jem Morgan, and the Lady in Purple.
