The building now houses the Country Fabrics Store,One • room schoolhouses are part of our American history and can be found (or remembered) in various spots around the countryside. They were built to accommodate the educational needs of small settlements or groups of farms.Occasionally, a private school was built to educate the children of a family, most often one of means.In the spring of 185-1 John Roberts Lowrie moved to Warriors Mark from Hollidaysburg after giving up his law practice there due to ill health.At his new home, he became legal adviser to Lyon. Shorb and Company, at that lime the largest iron manufacturers in the United States with interests in Central Pennsylvania. Lowrie’s health improved greatly as his position with the company increased to one of vast importance.Lowrie and his first wife, who died a young woman in 5863, had three children. He remarried in 1866 and five more children were born. The Lowrie home, located across Route 552 from the school, is surrounded by rare species of trees Lowrie collected in his study of botany.The work of Balsar Rumberger, the school was probably built soon after the family's arrival in Warriors Mark, according to Elizabeth NearhaoL 'oca! historian. Miss Nearhoof said that one of the teachers. Miss Fannie, married William, Lyon Lowrie M. D.. son of John Roberts, and their daughter, Mary Lyon Lowrie taught at the school for four years following hergraduation from teacher’s school.The Lowrie family often invited town children to the school and the Presbyterian congregation held prayer meetings there. At one time, it may have been a temporary residence for a newly married couple. From the late 1850s to the turn of the century, its one room resounded withthe voices of the Lowrie children and others who there Seamed the three Rs. The substantially built structure has been restored, as closely as was* possible, to its original beauty.rf.
