Thisonly stunned it but he pounced upon Us back and held it by the ears with a death-like grip for some moments; to i him it seemed hours, as his strength | was fast giving out Soon Watkins i appeared on the scene and acted quickly and effectually. He attempted to lasso the beast with a chain, but the first time it grabbed the chain in its fr6nt paws and would have torn It in twain, when Watkins gave it a sudden jerk, releasing it.The second attempt was successful and they at once started to run down the mountainside and by continually pulling on the chain the bear was almost strangled, which had the effect of subduing it somewhat. By the time they reached the public road its strength and nearly all Its wild in* sfclnet had temporarily vanished and it became as docile as a kitten. They lead it to Mr. Lovett's home, where tberq threatened to be more trouble, as when they entered the premises a big dog owned by that gentleman attacked it. This for a time kept allconcerned busy, as at the sight of the dog the bear again became vicious. For a time there was a battle royal, but the bear finally weakened and by quick action shambled up a post to the roof of a porch.Here a new situation presented itself. Bruin jjositively refused to leave that roof and the dog could not be captured as it was now bent on killing the bear. After considerable persuasion the dog was finally gotten into the house and the bear placed In a smoke bouse, where it can he seen by any person doubting the authenticity of this tale. Judging from appearances it is not more than a year old and weighs about 125 pounds, although Mr. Lovett thought when he had the encounter with it that ft weighed twice as much.
