For some time they wandered about but couldnot secure Just the necessary wood that was needed. Suddenly, while near the hollow of a tree, Watkins heard a growl that at first startled him. Mafetng closer observations he espied the head of a bear staring at him. Quickly ripping from a near* by pine tree a big knot that was about four feet long, he decided that withj this weapon he would be obliged toidefend himself, for he had no other, nor did Lovett, who hurried to bis as* siatance, as It was at once apparenti that the angry bear had decided to at*ft; tack the almost defenseless men.I Watkins at first thought he would | run to the Lovett home for a gun, but instead decided not to do this as I the bear might attack his companion. In the meantime Brnln came from his*' winter quarters and getting on his hind legs walked toward Watkins, who dealt it a terrific blow with the club he had. This had the effect of ren-fdering the animal senseless, after which Watkins was hurriedly dfs-patched for an iron chain, as they now believed they could capture the animal alive.
