L, Hadley and his sister, Mrs, Galus Paddock. The program consisted largely of reminiscences centering in the family life within the Hadley home, recently sold to the Edwardsvillc Community Unit school district for* administration offices and special education rooms,Mrs. Paddock summarized the history of the house, built soon after the marriage of her parents In 1875, on a large acreage which was a part of 4hc lands owned by Edward M, West, father of Mrs, Hadley, Some of the stories told Included the setting of the West home which still stands at 027 St. Louis street, occupied by E, P, Schneider. Originally nine rooms, the Hadley house was enlarged and remodeled at the turn of the century when the parents and six children returned from residing in Washington, where the Honorable W. F, L. Hadley represented his district in Congress.The remodeled house introduced a now typo of architecture to Ed-wardsYille. California had recently become popular and the fine houses being built there had towered rooms and spacious piazzas. The redesigned Hadley house featured both of these, as well os a centra! hall of manorial dimensions and a children's dining room,The era In which the house was rebuilt emphasized the advancement of culture within the home, and the Hadley house was one of only three built in Edwurdsville prior to 1900 with specially designated libraries and music rooms,Among the traditional observances recounted, Mrs, Paddock told of the tree, always candle-lighted, that has hud a part ir, the Christmas celebrations of the family, placed always in the drawing room with tire entire household singing Merry, Merry Christmas Bells us they circled the tree and the Increasing generations returning to participate.neW,45'vhhGpiBjrotv0!e
