By LARRY YAWNRadio Station WABQ has become under fire from a coalition of black organizations which are charging the station with a lack of relevance to the black community. For the black oriented, white owned station, the community and the coalition, the broadcasting performance of the station hasbeen an on again, off againaffair.Coalition leaders and Booth Broadcasting Company officials met at 3:00 p.m. last Wednesday, at the Holiday Inn.Coalition demands were presented to Booth officials, who asked for time to consider them.Among them were the installation of a black station manager, and the appointment of a News Director, Operations Manager, and Sales Manager. Also sought was an agreement not to take disciplinary action against the employees for recognizing the activities of the coalition. The Coalition also demanded that WABQ commit specified portions of the broadcast day to public service programming, news and music. (In an evaluation sponsored by the Cleveland Council of Churches thestation was found to be overcommercialized—exceeding standards established for the broadcast industry.)The Coalition decided to close the station down while Booth considered its course of action.Lead by representatives of the Black Unity House, ModelCities, the 21st District• lt;£■ *(Continued on Page 4A)
