Sandra Day O’Connor coming to YumaFriends of Yuma County Librariesinformer justice: *«Y SARAH WQMER©YSSARAHWOMERAuthor and retired Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O’Connor will be visiting Yuma on Dec. 6, courtesy of Friends of Yuma County Libraries.“She’s a remarkable woman in so many ways/’ said Ruth Zinn, a member of the Friends of Yuma County Libraries.Zinn noted that their group tries to bring in as many authors as they can to Yuma and with the Arizona Centennial drawing near, they thought O’Connor would make for a great speaker as she contributed a great deal to thestate’s history.She explained O’Connor is also the author of three books, including a national best-seller, “The Majesty of the Law,” in addition to New York Times best-sellers “Lazy B” and “Finding Susie.”Zinn said that although she is not certain about the exact topics of O’Connor's presentation, she will probably be willing to accept questions from the audience.From 1965 to 1969, O’Connor served as assistant attorney general of Arizona and in 1969, she was appointed to the Arizona State Senate. In 1973, she was elected as majority leader and in 1975, she waselected judge of the Maricopa County Superior Court. She served until 1979, when she was appointed to the Arizona Court of Appeals.She was nominated by President Ronald Reagan as the first female associate justice of the Supreme Court and took the oath of office on Sept. 25,1981.As of 2011, O’Connor was the last Supreme Court justice to have held elected office.The event will be held at 6 p.m. at Kofa High School Auditorium, 3100 S. Avenue A. Although the event is free, tickets are required due to a limited amount of space. Tickets can be picked up from the Friends of Yuma County Libraries Bookstore, 2951 S. 21st Drive inside the Yuma Main Library.A special reception formembers of the friends group only will be at the Radisson Hotel at 4 p.m. Those interested in joining the Friends of Yuma County Libraries can stop by the bookstore and fill out an application.Copies of O’Connor’s books, provided by Barnes and Noble, can be purchased at the presentation as well as at the Barnes and Noble bookstore prior to and after the event.
